Jamaica 2021: Best Things to do in Ocho Rios! (Photos and Video)

Disclaimer: My stay was partially hosted by, Jamaica Inn.

Some of the best things I did in Ocho Rios were, Dunn’s River, Blue Hole, maximum RELAXING and more. If you’re headed to Jamaica in 2020, consider bookmarking this post and watching the attached video of my time on this amazing island!

Ocho Rios 2020 travel guide
My private veranda, Jamaica Inn

My First Trip to Jamaica.

This was my first time to Jamaica and I didn’t know what to think or expect.

What I could I have expected Ocho Rios to possibly look like. Were there lots of buildings? Were there numerous, colorful homes lining their street blocks? Was it bustling with locals annoyed by tourists blocking their way as they maneuvered around them to get to work and life? Would there be litter and general loudness with car engines, foot traffic and sirens?

None of that.

Ocho Rios was quite the contrast! Read on.

Best Place to Stay:

My beautiful Room
Veranda Suite, Jamaica Inn

The Jamaica Inn. I stayed in a Deluxe Veranda Suite. And, as you will see in the video, it was beautiful! My room was tastefully decorated with a big nod to traditional, yet, it managed to feel modern, fresh and comfortable. It was relaxing and dreamy! Moreover, the staff was top notch and seemed more like family than people who help keep things running smoothly.  Voted as one of Jamaica’s best resorts, the Jamaican Inn really has it all.  As you will see in my video vlog, I could do as much or as little as I wanted. I got out for a few excursions, however, I often chose to relax because when I’m home I get to do very little of that! I am usually running after my sweet 6 & 4yr old! Ha!

Some of The Best Things to do:

Dunn’s River Falls

One of the best things to know: “Dunn’s River Falls is one of the very few travertine waterfalls in the world that empties directly into the sea.”

Man! I enjoyed my “high powered ride” to the Fall, as much as I enjoyed hiking and taking in its beauty. Wanna see how I got to the waterfall? Watch here.

That water is serious! If rushes down the fall and rocks so powerfully and fast, yet it is so much fun! I loved how safe I felt at the falls. There were many staff members happy to watch out for and help climbers. Getting mesmerized at the beauty of the water is the toughest part. Also, walk along the left side of the fall and try to to stare directly down at the water, look a bit beyond, more toward the “background”. If you stare for too long, you could feel a bit disoriented and loose your balance. ***WEAR PROPER SHOES***

Blue Hole jumper.

Blue Hole Mineral Spring

Maybe it should be called Blue Holes since this gorgeous, picturesque forrest has numerous blues holes to swim in! Also note, a small amount of hiking is required to reach a number of the swimming holes, but they are generally quick and easy. Though the name, Blue Hole, sounds straight forward, this place is HUGE! There were 2 different snack bars (& grill) available as well and an option for a mud massage. There were a number of vendors inside and outside of the park selling t-shirts, “funny cigarettes” and “Happy Brownies”. The staff was super friendly and helpful, I loved this place!

Reggae Pot Restauran, Ocho Rios
Vegetarian/Vegan deliciousness, from Reggae Pot Restaurant.

Reggae Pot Restaurant – Dine Locally

I was extremely excited to arrive at this restaurant! I am so happy my driver took me after my adventures at Blue Hole, this meal came at the best time!

A vegan, vegetarian restaurant right in Ocho Rios and not too far from the hotel. I devoured my meal, it was so delicious! It is a humble, take-out style, restaurant but it hits all of the spot! Well seasoned, bomb ass food. By the way, I believe I saw a few tables for self dining out front.

Relax at a Beach

My stay at the Jamaica Inn included access to their private beach. And, from what I’ve learned, their beach is one of the very few in the area with unobstructed views of the turquoise, blue waters of Ocho Rios.

Is Jamaica Safe for Tourists?

Yes.

First, I must mention, how I heard from too many people, “be careful!”, “be safe!”. And things of that nature. I even spoke to a woman at American Express that shared her shock that I would dare ask about renting a car in “that type of place.”

Turns out, I never felt like had to question my safety during my trip that .  For example, I left my patio doors open ALL DAY, even when I left for excursions.  And I never spotted any shifty looking characters or shadiness of any kind. I also had to the pleasure of being driven around Jamaica (including my almost 2 hour drive from the airport), so I got a first-hand look. Nothing scary.

I saw many of tourists walking around town, some even jogging and dining at local restaurants. Ease and comfort is what I noticed in the way people moved about the city. And it made me wonder how Jamaica has gotten such a rep with so many Americans. I am so happy I’m big on digging a little deeper and “investigating” things for myself. And now, based on first hand experience, I can say, GO! You will fall in love and write to thank me later!  People were warm and friendly and the island was simply gorgeous. My next visit will be Kingston, and of course, I will update you all.

Driving in Jamaica: Should you rent a car?

Locals seemed to drive safely, there wasn’t a ton of traffic, and It didn’t appear that I would be car-jacked by some shady dude hanging on the corner. Seems like it would have been totally fine to rent a car and I felt a little bummed that I hadn’t.

By the way, if you need a driver, I hired these guys multiples times. They were awesome ( and happen to be brothers)!  Andrew (876) 426-0304 Paul (876) 850-9352

In conclusion, I would love to encourage you to experience Jamaica too! my trip to Jamaica was everything! I love it and cant wait to return! GO!
